ifps English course aims to
provide students with a wide-ranging improvement
in reading, writing, speaking and listening,
with an emphasis on developing Academic English
skills.
The syllabus has been designed to meet the needs
of ifps students, in order to best prepare them
for university study. The course includes the
following:
- Advanced writing skills
- including the conventions of academic writing
e.g. citation, referencing and bibliographies.
- Development of advanced
reading skills through a variety of authentic
texts.
- Understanding and
summarising academic sources.
- Oral
Presentations.
- Listening skills - including
note taking from lectures.
- Class discussions/debates.
- Library skills - finding
sources from catalogues (ifps students have
access to Glasgow University library throughout
the course).
- Study skills and working
to deadlines.
ASSESSMENT
Students are assessed on
a combination of coursework and a final examination,
which measure students’ achievements
in all four language skills.
Students are required to complete a research
project on a topic related to their intended
field of study at university. This leads to
the creation of a folio of sources, an extended
written essay and an oral presentation. The
coursework and final examination results are
combined to produce the final English grade.
The content and methods of assessment ensure
that the ifps students are tested on topics
and skills covered on the course.
